Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) — Wood Wool Board
Q1What is wood wool board, and how does it absorb sound?
Wood wool board is an acoustic panel made from fine wood fibres (wood wool) bonded with cement. The porous structure created by the wood fibres and cement matrix allows sound waves to penetrate the surface, where they lose energy through friction. This results in NRC values of 0.60–0.80 depending on thickness and installation method. KCL-certified test data is available upon request.
Q2Can wood wool board be custom-made in any colour?
Yes. Tornex wood wool boards can be painted close to any desired colour using premium paints such as Benjamin Moore. The cement-bonded structure accepts both water-based and oil-based paints with excellent adhesion. CNC routing is also available for custom shapes, perforations, and surface patterns.
Q3Is wood wool board moisture-resistant?
Cement-bonded wood wool board is significantly more moisture-resistant than standard wood-based panels such as MDF or plywood. The cement binder maintains structural integrity in humid environments. This makes it suitable for restaurants, lobbies, educational facilities, and other spaces with variable humidity, though prolonged direct water contact is not recommended.
Q4How can I request a wood wool board sample?
Tornex provides physical sample boards so you can evaluate colour, texture, and surface finish before placing a project order. Our newly updated sample set includes standard 25 mm wood wool board with Benjamin Moore paint swatches. Please contact us via the consultation inquiry form and we will dispatch samples promptly.
Q5What types of spaces are wood wool boards used in?
Wood wool boards are used in education facilities (schools, universities), cultural venues (museums, libraries, performance halls), hotels and restaurants, healthcare (clinics, hospitals), and corporate offices. The natural wood fibre aesthetic makes them particularly popular in spaces where biophilic or organic design is desired.
